How PilotTrace handles your files

Diagnostic packages can contain device names, serial numbers, tenant details and a device hardware hash. Here is exactly what happens to them.

Text logs and JSON reports

When you upload .log, .txt, .xml, .reg, .json, .csv or .html files, they are read in your browser. They are not uploaded to our server.

CAB and ZIP archives

Browsers can't unpack CAB files, so archives (up to 50 MB) are sent to the PilotTrace server over HTTPS. The server:

  1. checks the archive's file list and declared size before unpacking, and refuses unsafe archives;
  2. unpacks it into a temporary folder and reads the text logs;
  3. sends the report back to your browser;
  4. deletes the archive and the unpacked files as soon as the request finishes, whether it succeeded or failed.

File contents are not stored, logged or used for anything else. Our hosting provider keeps standard request logs (time, address, size and status), which do not include file contents.

What PilotTrace never does

Before you upload

A full Autopilot diagnostic CAB includes the device hardware hash, serial number and tenant details. Only upload packages you are allowed to share. If your policy doesn't allow uploads, extract the CAB on your machine and upload just the .log files. Those stay in your browser.
